FEATURED TOPICS

Curated knowledge and resources to keep you informed, prepared, and ready to engage with forestry’s most pressing topics.

Why It Matters

Full rotation forest planning and management for multiple values requires deep knowledge of the possible trade-offs or synergies between different practices used throughout stand development, and the values and objectives being managed.

Today’s forestry requires engaging in collaborative or community-based approaches, and can require less technical but fundamentally important knowledge about relationship-building and communication. The technical and experiential knowledge can take a lifetime to acquire, but forest practitioners need to make decisions and participate in processes throughout their career that may require different degrees of familiarity with a range of topics. It is important to establish a shared understanding of what we already know as a key first step in co-creating new knowledge.

The Featured Topic section provides this type of structure and learning experience for existing or emerging “hot topics” for forest practitioners.

The Structure

The Featured Topics are designed with the understanding that no two learners engage with information in exactly the same way. Whether you prefer to quickly dive into in-depth reports, learn through interactive tools, or incrementally narrow your focus to build your knowledge base, the Featured Topics help provide multiple pathways so you can engage with content in the way that works best for you.
This approach is rooted in feedback from forest practitioners, who told us they wanted greater independence and flexibility to shape their own learning journey. The result is a creative space that empowers both curiosity and mastery.
The Featured Topics will help introduce you to the elements of the SIPex that match your learning style and learning stage best. If you’re new to the SIPex, use the Featured Topics to help navigate to the information that you need in a way that makes sense to you and your needs.

How Topics are Selected

Featured Topics are determined through a prioritization process based on what knowledge is most relevant and applicable to forest practitioners, today. The SIPex Strategic Framework outlines our prioritization process.

Before diving deep into reports, published literature, or connecting with a community of practice in a topic area, practitioners may benefit first by viewing a topic from “10,000 ft”.

In the featured topics pages, we describe the “Significance” and “Impact to Practitioners” to provide this highest level overview and contextualization of why a featured topic might matter to forest practitioners. The “At a Glance” and “Knowledge Gaps & Emerging Questions” sections provide deeper context and a synthesis of knowledge and knowledge gaps within a topic area produced by experts in the field.Going deeper into a topic area, we curate and present data that practitioners can interact with to better understand applications in the province in “Tried and Tested”.Lastly, we provide a curated guide to content that can be found throughout the SIPex in the “Resources” section, structured into categories of information relevant to the topic.
